What’s So Great About STEM Education

What’s So Great About STEM Education

The acronym STEM is used to describe everything from summer camps to careers. When applied to curriculum, it means that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are taught together, rather than separately. Here at LMS this interdisciplinary approach makes perfect sense. There’s no way to build a boat without using knowledge from all four disciplines, just as there’s no way to fully understand boatbuilding without building a boat. Last Saturday, we took boat-related STEM curriculum and our belief that children (and maybe everyone!) learn better through hands-on activities to the Charleston STEM Festival. Since we couldn’t build full size wooden boats with the 10,000 expected attendees, we decided to host the Buoyancy Challenge. Volunteer Spotlight: Peyton Russell

Volunteer Spotlight: Peyton Russell

I've been enjoying my time at LMS very much. The kids are always excited and engaged and it is very rewarding to see their fascination in the projects. I also think its great to give the kids some time to decompress after school and let them do something they truly enjoy. I believe it's a lot of fun for everyone and I'm going to continue to look forward to coming each week! Thank you for organizing all of this and helping make it all happen! Top 5 Reasons to Attend the Fall Party!

Top 5 Reasons to Attend the Fall Party!

LMS is hosting a Fall Party fundraiser on Saturday, November 12 from 7 - 10:30 PM. Here’s why you need to join us at our Mount Pleasant home, the Boatyard at 1230 Pherigo Street. Share with your friends and purchase your tickets today! 5. Eat Your Fill With the first crisp evenings of November upon us, we know what everyone in Charleston is thinking: It’s finally time for oysters! We’ll be roasting fresh, local oysters, so grab your knife and show up hungry. For non-oyster eaters, and all those who love a good southern meal, Charleston Bay Gourmet will be serving up plenty of barbecue, collard greens and biscuits. 4. Local Beverages on Tap Tripp Brower, Executive Director of LMS (and party planner in chief), personally selected kegs of Coast Brewing Company’s most delicious beers. Spirits from Firefly Distillery will make the evening merry, and there’s even a rumor of a signature fall cocktail sure to warm you up. Wine will also be available,...
