What’s So Great About STEM Education

What’s So Great About STEM Education

The acronym STEM is used to describe everything from summer camps to careers. When applied to curriculum, it means that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are taught together, rather than separately. Here at LMS this interdisciplinary approach makes perfect sense. There’s no way to build a boat without using knowledge from all four disciplines, just as there’s no way to fully understand boatbuilding without building a boat. Last Saturday, we took boat-related STEM curriculum and our belief that children (and maybe everyone!) learn better through hands-on activities to the Charleston STEM Festival. Since we couldn’t build full size wooden boats with the 10,000 expected attendees, we decided to host the Buoyancy Challenge. For five straight hours we handed tinfoil to kids, with instructions to shape the tinfoil into a boat that would hold as many coins as possible before sinking. The Buoyancy Challenge is a simple experiment that teaches many STEM concepts. Children also get really excited about it. What’s so...

A DAY WITH THE SC DNR

A DAY WITH THE SC DNR

The R/V Silver Crescent nosed up to the dock around 1100. The Silver Crescent is a research vessel captained by Rob Dunlap, a veteran of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. She and her crew had already been out to two stations that morning. Once I boarded the boat we had four more stations to visit. The stations are specific coordinates that DNR visits regularly to record information on catch size, composition and other details on the site and catch. Once we arrived at a given station, we would drop our net and trawl for 15minutes. After 15 minutes we hauled up the net via a very old but industrious motorized wench. The catch was mostly shrimp and small fish every time. The focus of this trip was not the shrimp but the by-catch (everything and anything else). The shrimp did however play its part in feeding the crew through day. Without a doubt the freshest shrimp I have ever had. The...

Lowcountry Magic

Lowcountry Magic

Anyone who lives in the Lowcountry knows the magic that resides here. We find comfort in the smell of low tide, we know the joy of an oyster roast, we’ve felt the unequaled peace of the marsh at sunset. The natural beauty that surrounds us instills a sense of place and sets the Lowcountry apart. Being raised in the Lowcountry has left an indelible mark on my soul. As a child I would walk down our beaches, float through our marshes, and wander through our forests. The sense of wonder that I felt then has never ceased and to this day I can find no greater pleasure than immersing myself in the natural beauty that surrounds us. I owe the deep connection I feel with nature to the Lowcountry and the passionate people who live here. The Lowcountry has shaped me into the man I am and shown me who I want to be. It inspired me to pursue a Biology degree...
